The needs of the theatre world are changing rapidly. Miranda can help you deliver quality production values to your audience, even from afar.

The Pivot

The New York premiere party for Snowpiercer was originally designed by Little Cinema to be a live, immersive, theatrical experience at the Top of the Standard in May 2020. When COVID-19 made that unworkable, they rapidly pivoted to an online experience.

However, they did not want this to be yet another Hollywood-squares style production with actors sitting in their homes - the goal was to be much more immersive.

They settled on building green screen sets inside the actors' homes, and then live-streaming these environments to an immersive website where the premiere guests could interact with the performers. The result was nearly seamless: the actors did not look like they were in their homes, but in the built environments.

The Problem

The challenge here was that due to COVID-19, it was difficult to adjust the lighting on site to match the digital scene, which was critical for making it look like the actor was actually in the scene.

There also wasn't a way to do cue changes, since the lights were in the actors' homes without a technician. One of the actors was playing a lounge singer, and various lighting looks were needed to coordinate with her music.

The Solution

Little Cinema and LD Andrew Schmedake used our CineMiranda controllers to live-control and update the lighting over the internet, without having to have a lighting tech on site.

The result was a stunning experience, while the actual sets were quite simple.

What this Means for Theatres

While most theatres don't have the budget of a Hollywood premiere, these models translate to streaming the kinds of performances that theatres are striving to deliver through this intermission. Semi-staged readings, cabarets, talk shows and lectures, even fundraising galas - as production values grow, having "actors with a ring-light" simply won't be enough.

Audiences may not return to the theatre for a while, but they will still expect the high-quality production values and immersive environments they're accustomed to - and Miranda is the simple solution to lighting these events.
